What is a Wheel of Names?
Use this wheel of names to make a quick random choice with a group. Type or paste a list, put one name or option on each line, and press Spin. The animated name spinner lands on one entry and shows the selected result. You can shuffle the list, clear it, remove a winner before the next spin, or keep the same names for repeated rounds.
A random name picker can help teachers choose a student for a turn, families decide who picks a game, teams assign a task, or friends choose a prize or activity. The wheel is meant for light, everyday decisions. It does not promise a legally auditable drawing, secure lottery result, or certified random process. Names stay on this device unless you deliberately put them into a share link.
The wheel starts with sample names to show how it works. Replace those with your own list. Names are kept in this browser page while you use it; they are not saved to an account. A share link includes the wheel list and uploaded photos in its URL, so only share it with people you trust. Avoid entering sensitive personal information on a shared device, and clear the list when you finish if other people may use the same screen.
How to use the random name picker
Enter each participant or choice on a separate line in the names box. You can type names one at a time or paste a list from a document or spreadsheet. Blank lines are ignored, and leading or trailing spaces are trimmed. Each remaining line becomes one wheel slice. Keep labels short so they are easier to read on the wheel, especially when your list is long.
Press Spin to animate the wheel. When it stops, the selected name appears in a result panel. The selected entry is not removed automatically, so you can use the wheel again with the same group. In the winner popup, select Remove winner from the wheel before you continue if you want that entry excluded from later rounds. When the list is empty, add more names or reset your list before continuing.
Shuffle changes the order of the names before a spin. Clear removes the current entries so you can enter a new group. Sound can be turned on or off. The expand control makes the wheel area larger on supported screens, and the same controls work on a phone, tablet, or desktop browser.

What can you use a name wheel for?
Teachers often use a classroom name picker to choose a student for a question, presentation, reading turn, or classroom job. A visible wheel can make the choice feel clear to the room and add a little anticipation. For accessibility and classroom privacy, consider using first names, initials, or labels instead of a full roster, and follow your school's rules for student information.
At work, a team picker can assign a meeting starter, lunch option, demo order, or small task. A random picker wheel can also help a group settle on a board game, movie, workout, or weekend activity. Add choices rather than people when the decision is about what to do, and make sure everyone is comfortable with the options before spinning.
For birthdays and parties, a prize wheel can select a small giveaway, challenge, or next activity. Explain the rules first, including whether a winner remains on the wheel and whether each person has one or multiple entries. The wheel does not verify eligibility, age, location, or official promotion rules, so it should not be used as the sole system for a regulated contest.
How the wheel selection works
Every line in the list becomes one slice of equal size. If there are eight entries, each slice takes one eighth of the circle. When you spin, the game randomly chooses one of the entries and animates the wheel to stop with that slice at the pointer. The selected label is shown after the motion ends.
Equal slices mean that each listed entry has the same chance in a single spin, assuming every entry appears once. If you enter a person's name twice, that person has two slices and therefore a larger share of the possible outcomes. This can be useful for an informal weighted picker, but it is easy to create unequal chances by accident. Check your list before spinning when fairness matters to the group.
The wheel uses the list in the current page session. Shuffle changes the order for display but does not add or remove entries. Choosing Remove winner from the wheel in the result popup removes that entry only after you press Continue, changing the options and probabilities in later rounds. The game does not create an external record or provide a verifiable audit trail.
- One line becomes one slice.
- Repeated names count as repeated entries.
- All entries have equal slices unless repeated.
- Removing a winner changes the list for the next spin.
- The result is for casual choices, not a certified drawing.
Tips for making a useful wheel
Use one consistent format for your entries. If you are choosing a person, use the same style for everyone, such as first names or initials. If you are choosing from options, make each choice easy to distinguish. Very long text can be hard to read on a narrow slice, so use a short label and explain details outside the wheel if needed.
Check spelling and duplicates before the spin. Duplicate entries may be intentional for a weighted selection, but if they are not intentional they can give one person or option extra chances. For group decisions, agree on the options and rules before showing the wheel result so everyone understands what a selection means.
For a big class or team, paste a prepared list and make sure each line contains one entry. The wheel supports a practical list size for ordinary use; an extremely large list may be crowded and slow on older devices. For a very long roster, split the group into rounds or use a dedicated system designed for large, managed lists.
Randomness, fairness, and limits
This wheel is designed as a casual random name spinner. The interface randomly selects among entries, but a visible animation is not proof that a drawing meets legal, regulatory, or organizational requirements. It is not designed for high-value prizes, regulated lotteries, hiring decisions, grading, disciplinary actions, or other consequential choices.
A fair informal choice starts with a fair list. Include each eligible person or option once unless the group has agreed to weighted entries. Do not remove or add names after seeing a result in a way that changes the rules for a particular person. If participants need confidence in a formal drawing, use a transparent process, documented eligibility rules, a suitable audited tool, and an independent observer where appropriate.
The tool does not save a permanent spin history, identify participants, verify the list, or prove that nobody changed it. Results may be affected if someone edits the names before a spin or reloads the page. Treat the wheel as a convenient group activity rather than a substitute for a formal selection process.
Privacy and device use
Names entered in the wheel remain in the page state in your browser while the page is open. This tool has no sign-in and does not need a user account. If you close or refresh the page, the current names may be cleared. Do not assume the list will be available later, and avoid entering private details that do not need to appear on screen.
When using a classroom projector or shared computer, consider whether the list is appropriate for everyone to see. Use labels, initials, or team names if that better protects privacy. Clear the entries before passing the device to someone else, and follow the privacy policies that apply to your school, workplace, or event.
The sound control is optional. If sound is enabled, the browser may ask for permission to play audio after you interact with the page. You can keep sound off and still use every wheel feature. The page is designed to work without an installation or download.
Common questions about a wheel of names
Can I paste names? Yes. Paste one name or option per line. The text box treats each non-empty line as one slice. Can I spin again with the same list? Yes. Winners stay on the wheel unless you switch on the removal option. Can I use it for teams or classroom turns? Yes, for informal decisions, as long as you use a suitable list and follow relevant privacy rules.
Can the wheel be weighted? The easiest casual method is to add an entry more than once, but that gives the repeated entry more slices. Make this clear to everyone first. Is the result saved? There is no permanent results history. If you need a record, write down the result and the rules yourself, or choose a system that supports auditable records.
Does the wheel guarantee a particular person will win? No. Each spin is random among current entries. If a specific outcome is required, do not present the wheel as a random selection. Does it work on mobile? The layout adapts to smaller screens, and the names editor and spin button remain available in a vertical layout.
Use the wheel as a fun decision helper
A wheel of names works best when the decision is simple, the list is accurate, and everyone understands how the result will be used. It can add a quick visual moment to a classroom activity, group game, team meeting, or family choice. It is not a replacement for discussion when people have important needs or concerns about the available options.
Before spinning, confirm the names, decide whether winners stay in the list, and agree whether duplicate entries are allowed. Then spin and use the displayed result for the agreed purpose. If the result is surprising, remember that a random choice can produce the same person more than once when winners remain on the wheel.
This free online name picker is built for convenience and light entertainment. Use it thoughtfully, keep personal data to a minimum, and select a more formal process whenever fairness must be documented or the outcome has serious consequences.
Wheel features and controls
The wheel combines a name list with a visual random picker. Add up to 200 active entries, including up to 100 resized images, spin the wheel, and see the selected name in a winner popup. Shuffle the current list to change its display order, or clear it when you want to start again. A recent-results row helps the group remember the latest picks during the current page session.
Use Wheel settings to choose online suspense clicks, a rising suspense tone, a beep, a tick, or a chime while the wheel spins, then choose applause, a chime, or a fanfare for the winner. The online spin sound loads only when you start spinning. Pick a slow-start build, smooth glide, ease-out, or ticking wheel animation and a confetti, sparkle, or pulse celebration. Hide the names panel when you want the wheel to take focus, then bring it back with Show names. The winner popup can remove the selected entry before the next round.
Add photos to the wheel
Choose Upload images beneath the names list to add up to 100 pictures. The browser resizes each image automatically and places it into the same wheel as typed names, with a small photo thumbnail on its slice. You can mix text and photo entries, remove a thumbnail with its corner button, or spin a wheel made entirely of pictures. Image file names are used as labels for the entries.
When a photo entry wins, the winner card displays the selected image at a larger size. Uploaded photos stay in the current browser page unless you create a share link. Since images make links longer, a wheel with many photos may be too large to share; removing some images or choosing smaller source photos can help.
- Up to 100 photos per wheel, resized in your browser.
- Mix photo entries with up to 100 typed names.
- The winning photo appears in the result card.

Spin sounds and winner celebrations
Wheel settings let you pick a suspense sound for the spin and a separate sound for the winner. Spin choices include online wheel clicks, a rising suspense tone, festive Christmas bells, classic beep, quick tick, soft chime, or silence. Set the sound volume in the side panel, and use the speaker button to mute all effects. The online audio is loaded only when a spin starts; if it cannot play, the wheel uses a local sound fallback when available.
For the winner, choose applause, bright chime, fanfare, or Off. Browser audio usually starts after a click or tap, so make one interaction with the page before expecting sound on a shared display. A Christmas theme is also available in the wheel color settings.
Wheel designs, themes, and motion
Personalize the wheel in settings with six frame designs: Classic, Minimal, Neon, Gold, Glass, and Sunset. Choose a ready-made color theme, including Ocean, Berry, Meadow, Royal, Aurora, Rose, Christmas, Executive, and Vibrant, or customize the slice colors and page background. Country Flags paints the wheel with a selected flag while keeping each entry in its own slice.
Set wheel labels between 10 and 15 pixels and choose a spin duration from six to nineteen seconds. The default motion starts slowly and builds suspense before easing to a stop; Smooth glide, Quick ease out, and Ticking steps are available too. For the result, select Confetti, Sparkles, Winner pulse, or No animation. Light and Dark appearance options help the wheel fit a room or projector.
Wheel settings: spin time and appearance
Open Wheel settings to adjust how long the wheel spins. The duration slider runs from a quick six-second spin to a longer nineteen-second spin, with eleven seconds as the default. When the wheel animation is enabled, the result popup appears after the selected duration. Turn the animation off to reveal the result almost immediately.
Choose a label font size from 10 to 15 px, select spin and winner sounds independently, and choose a slow-start build, smooth, ease-out, or ticking motion. The winner effect can show confetti, sparkles, a pulse, or no animation. Select Classic, Minimal, Neon, Gold, Glass, or Sunset for the circle frame. Choose Light or Dark appearance to suit the room and screen. Ocean, Berry, Sunset, Meadow, Slate, Royal, Aurora, Professional, Rose, Executive, and Vibrant themes give the wheel a different color set. You can also choose a background color, open Customize theme, edit individual slice colors, add a color, or remove colors you do not need. The wheel repeats the chosen colors around the list.
Country flag themes and wheel colors
Select Country flags in the theme menu to choose a country or region. Its real flag image appears across the circular wheel, and a small flag remains visible in the center Spin button. Names stay on top of the flag, with the wheel dividers separating each entry. This makes a country-themed wheel for geography warm-ups, international day activities, sports discussions, or travel games.
The flag theme changes the wheel surface while keeping each name as its own equal-size slice. You can return to a color theme at any time. If the selected flag image cannot load, the center control falls back to the flag symbol so the wheel remains usable.
Winner popup and remove-winner option
When a spin ends, a winner popup highlights the selected entry and adds a short celebration. Check Remove winner from the wheel if that person or choice should not be selected again in the next round. Press Continue to apply the removal. Leave the box unchecked to keep the full list for another spin.
The wheel does not remove an entry until you confirm the popup. This gives the group a chance to see the result and decide whether the next round should use the same list. Repeated entries are treated separately, so removing one matching entry leaves other copies in place.

Full-screen wheel for classrooms and groups
Use the expand control to put the wheel into full-screen mode on a projector or shared display. The names panel hides automatically to reduce distractions, while Wheel settings stays available. Choose Show names if you need to review or edit the list during the activity, or select Exit full screen to return to the page.
Press Escape to leave full-screen mode. On a phone or tablet, the wheel and controls adapt to the available screen width. For a group activity, keep the wheel large enough for everyone to see and use short labels so the names remain readable on smaller slices.
Troubleshooting the name spinner
If the wheel does not spin, check that the list has at least one active entry and that a spin is not already in progress. If a name is missing, look for an empty line or check whether the list has reached its 200-entry limit. Shorten long labels if they are hard to read on the wheel.
If the flag theme shows a fallback symbol instead of a flag image, check the internet connection and choose the country again. If sound is not audible, check the sound button and the device volume; some browsers start audio only after a user click. If the wheel looks crowded, hide the names panel or use full-screen mode.
